With just 13 years, American boy Jordan Romero became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Everest on Saturday, surpassing the previous record set by 16-year-old Nepalese Temba Tsheri.
Meanwhile Apa Sherpa, who is also WWF Climate Ambassador, went up Everest with fellow climbers on a mission also to collect rubbish, a growing environmental problem on the mountain. Reaching the peak, he broke his own world record by scaling Mount Everest for the 20th time.
On a different note, an all-Nepali team of 31 Sherpas, inclusive of 11 porters and 20 mountaineers, is heading for Everest with the aim to clear more than 2000 kg of garbage from the "Death Zone" of Mt. Everest becuase Everest is "a symbol of Nepali pride it needs to be cleaned up" they said. They aim to bring old ropes, flags, dead bodies, oxygen bottles and other waste materials scattered along the climbing trails and at the summit itself.
"Our Extreme Expedition 2010" is entirely sponsored by Nepali banks, Nepal Mountain Association, Hotel Association of Nepal, business houses and envoirmental organisations.
